Halford Hewitt

As usual, the Halford Hewitt took place from 2nd-4th of April. The St Bees’ team started to assemble from the Monday with all members being present and correct for the official practice day on Wednesday.
In the first round, St Bees were drawn against Bradfield School at Royal Cinques Ports with a late 15.00 tee time. It’s fair to say that Bradfield have a wealth of golfing talent and their team looked like a who’s who of the European Tour, with the offspring of Sam Torrance, Ronan Raffety & Bernard Gallagher all gracing their team sheet.
St Bees were unfortunately left in awe of the golf on display and succumbed easily in a 5-0 whitewash. Bradfield continued right through to the semi-final, where they were eventually beaten by winners Tonbridge. Let’s hope for a more favourable draw and better luck next year!

Prince’s Plate

As usual, all Hewitt 1st round runners up are automatically entered for the Plate competition, where each school enters a team of 6 to play 3 foursomes matches over Prince’s. The first round took place on Friday morning, when St Bees beat Cranleigh 2-1.
So through to the weekend – always a sign of a successful Hewitt week. In the second round we were drawn against Sherborne. In the top match, Neil Morton and Adrian Peckitt struggled from the start and lost by a margin.
In the final match James Doggett & Andrew Goodwin were involved in a very competitive and close match. Despite being 1 down at the turn, the pair felt in control. A dubious rules’ call turned the 10th, from what looked like a certain win for St Bees into a loss, taking the game to 2 down. This seemed to spur the Sherborne pair on and despite St Bees’ best efforts, our pair never recovered and eventually lost 4and3.
With the match result having been decided, the 2nd match, which paired John Currie and Gareth Edgar, was conceded as a half on the 17th green.
Match Result: St Bees 1 Sherborne 2
All in all a successful week. Let’s hope for a better draw in the Hewitt next year.
