St. Bees Golf Academy

The St. Bees School Golf Academy continues to make progress and is now recognised as an important asset in the marketing of the school. The school is one of only four independents in the country with a Golf Academy and only one of two independent schools with its own Golf Studio. Our resident PGA professional, Stuart Hemmings, is now employed full-time coaching pupils at the school. Twenty six students are now enrolled on the advanced programme to have individual tuition.  This has to be good news for our long term membership of the Halford Hewitt!
Since the last OSB Bulletin, work on both the short course practice area and the new chipping and putting green has commenced. The short course practice area is being established thanks to a bequest from Tom Fletcher, and a substantial contribution to the costs of the chipping and putting green has been provided by Nigel Costeloe in memory of his father and uncle. All are old boys of the school. Both projects should be complete by the spring of 2010. We are indebted to these Old St. Beghians for their generosity, which has allowed us to develop these two important golf training areas. Keep an eye out for the new school web-site, where there will be an area dedicated to the Golf Academy.
As always we would be very pleased to receive more donations for individual projects or as regular donations to the Golf Foundation for golf bursaries etc. Please contact either Michael Coffey or myself for further details.
