The St. Beghian Society Bristol and West of England Branch held its 60th annual dinner on May 8th at the Ship Inn, Alverston outside Bristol. In pleasant contrast to last year this was a well attended occasion. We were delighted to welcome the Head and Helen Capes, and David Lord from the school. Don Williams, the Society President responded to the toast “The Society” in a jocular way which typified a happily sociable evening. It was nice to welcome a number of ‘first timers’ including people who had left school in the 80s and 90s. Among the 24 who sat down to dinner we had Bill Frankland, who left school in 1930 and at 97 is still active in his chosen scientific field, and Emma Pyle, who left school in 1992 – and is at least several decades younger than Bill! Yes, we’ll do it again next year and I hope that at least some of those who declared interest but couldn’t manage the date this year will be able to join us next. Friday May 7th 2010 looks a good date to pencil in. Contact: Bill Affleck at william.affleck@btinternet or 01453 832619.
