Although we were well covered in our exclusive hospitality box, our bets had already been placed on wet weather! Thankfully, this was one bet we were pleased to lose. Early evening sunshine and blue sky set the running for a truly excellent and successful time for all. President’s Night at The Races was the first event of its kind organised for members of The St Beghian Society and guests. As it happened, there were one or two in our party who, as novices, were sharing their first experience at the races. However, it didn’t take too long for these people to be engrossed in the form and atmosphere of the meeting.

The ladies looked superb in their outfits and there was a good mix of company. As well as enjoying good food, sharing a drink or two and the excitement of the races, there was plenty of time to get to know people a bit better. Attending this event, I was pleased to meet Alan Mews (G 51-53) and his family for the first time. It was also good to see Philip and Helen Capes, and school governors Bill Roberts, and Martyn Hart (SH 63-68) with their wives Annette and Tess. One first time race-goer was Darryl Davies (F 62-68), who brought with him more than his fair share of beginners luck. Darryl was picking winners from the very first race. Commenting later, “It has been a fabulous event and I’ll definitely be back next time.” Darryl was quick to add. “Can you organise another one of these for next week?”

Anyone that couldn’t make it to this race event and is potentially interested for next year, please let me know now (em: don@kingdomofnorthumbria.co.uk). This will assist with early planning and will help to estimate the size of hospitality box to book. I will also be able to give you advance notice of the event date and the best ticket starting price.
